Pea Cleaning, Grading and Processing Equipment

ADDAMS designs complete cleaning and grading systems for dry peas intended for food production, seed multiplication, export and animal-feed applications. Peas are pulses, not grass seeds or cereal grains. Their round shape, relatively large size and sensitivity to cracking require a line designed specifically for pulse handling.

For pulse cleaning and quality separation, compare Fine Seed Cleaners, Gravity Separator and Optical Color Sorter. For dehulling or split products, review the separate de-hulling guide and splitting guide. Confirm crop-specific suitability and acceptable breakage.

The correct process depends on the pea variety, incoming moisture, percentage of field impurities, required hourly capacity and final market specification. ADDAMS supplies individual machines or a complete turnkey line from intake through final packing.

Typical Pea Processing Flow

Reception and Controlled Feeding

Raw peas enter through a reception hopper fitted with a regulated feeder. Stable feeding prevents overloading and allows every downstream separator to operate at its designed capacity. Aspiration removes dust, dry pods, light husk and loose plant material.

Pre-Cleaning and Fine Screening

An air-screen pre-cleaner removes stalks, strings and oversized foreign material, followed by sand, broken peas and undersized particles. A fine screen cleaner or grader then classifies the peas by diameter. Interchangeable screens are selected after sample testing to produce uniform commercial fractions without unnecessary product loss.

Stone and Heavy Impurity Removal

A Pressure De-Stoner separates stones, glass and mineral contamination that may be similar in size to the peas. Magnetic protection can also remove ferrous metal and protect downstream machines.

Density Separation

The ADDAMS Vigor Series Gravity Separator separates material according to specific weight. It rejects immature, insect-damaged, mould-affected and low-density peas while concentrating sound product. For planting seed, this stage can improve physical purity and support a uniform seed lot.

Shape and Colour Sorting

Because sound peas are naturally round, a spiral separator can remove flat, split or irregular particles. An optical colour sorter provides the final visual-quality stage by rejecting discoloured peas, foreign seeds and remaining defects.

Gentle Handling and Packing

Belt conveyors, low-impact bucket elevators and controlled drop heights reduce cracking. Clean peas can be stored in buffer bins, weighed into open-mouth bags or filled into big bags. Dust collection, centralized aspiration and PLC automation are available.

Equipment Commonly Used in Pea Lines

  • Intake hoppers, feeders and aspiration chambers
  • Flat-screen, rotary-drum or vibratory pre-cleaners
  • Fine screen cleaners and size graders
  • Pressure De-Stoners and magnetic separators
  • Vigor Series Gravity Separators
  • Spiral separators and optical colour sorters
  • Gentle elevators, conveyors, bins and packing systems

Food-Grade and Seed-Grade Applications

Food-grade pea lines focus on purity, uniform size, appearance and hygienic handling. Seed-grade lines also protect germination and minimize mechanical damage. Representative sample testing determines the correct screen openings, airflow, deck inclination and machine sequence.
